YFZ450 / YFZ450R is Yamaha’s Winning Race Quad

Feb 2, 2024

As the most technically advanced sport ATV on the market, with light and versatile features, the YFZ450 is the reigning champ on the ATV racetrack and on the trail.

Its advanced weldless frame is designed with suspension components that reduce weight and allow for a lower engine. YFZ450’s design is ideal for mass centralization, sharp handling, and comfort.

The light aluminum and steel chassis and high-tech, quick-revving 449cc fuel-injected engine make this machine a favorite pick for motocross.

Yamaha began production of the YFZ450 in 2004, and switched to fuel injected “YFZ450R” models in 2009. Today, it remains in production as the top racing quad because of its five-valve cylinder head, titanium valve technology, and high compression ratio that deliver mid-range to top-end power with more of a “hit” feeling right off idle.

For these reasons, the YFZ450 has a competitive edge over other Yamaha models. To help riders understand why, let’s focus on some of this model's critical features, modifications, and specifications.

Yamaha YFZ450 Built for Motocross

Technical features of the 2024 YFZ450r include a discreet LED panel that displays fuel, coolant temperature, check engine, and neutral gear indicators.

For racers, the low-effort throttle design and body configuration allows more room for the racer to move around, as well as reduces fatigue during long motos.

An assist-and-slipper clutch reduces clutch lever effort for less fatigue while increasing clutch plate pressure for positive engagement. This clutch system also reduces the engine braking effect for faster cornering, particularly when downshifting.

The large-diameter tapered handlebar reduces vibration and is mounted on four-way clamps, and the light aluminum frame is bolted (not welded) for durability. High-performance shocks are longer for increased stroke and bump absorption.

Further, the crankcase includes a counterbalance to reduce vibration and an oil tank that helps centralize mass.

With more room to hang off in the corners, this stable bodywork is designed with the best ergonomics and comfort in mind. From seat shape to easy-to-access body panels that allow for quick work without taking off its fenders, the YFZ450 has a design fit for champions.

YFZ450 Maintenance and Modifications

Although riders can take YFZ450 from showroom to track or trail, opportunities exist for after-market upgrades at Vito’s that will give your quad a competitive edge.

Here are a few modifications and maintenance suggestions to keep any year YFZ450 in top form.

The exhaust system's tubing step and size are carefully designed for maximum power, so consistent tuning is recommended.

Modifications to the air intake system can boost power and throttle responses. Check out our air filter products here .

The YFZ450 has an excellent stock chassis but there is room for improvement. For example, check out this new mounting bolt kit for both upper and both lower a-arms.

Steering dampers and stabilizers can significantly improve control and reduce fatigue. This pair of tie rods ends and ball joints , for example, can help enhance YFZ450 steering stabilization.

High-performance clutch kits, such as this aftermarket kit, let you get all the usable power from your motor down to the ground, even if you double your HP.

Yamaha’s Race-Ready YFZ450

Racers know that YFZ450 is made for them. With the help of Vito’s, its comfortable and light design will keep riders passing other quads with ease on the motocross track and trail alike.

The structurally, technically, and ergonomically superior YFZ450 holds the title for easy handling and takeoffs, as well as a chassis that medals in long-lasting stability and comfort.
